In 1994, at the age of 36, Kawakami debuted as a writer of literary fiction with a collection of short stories entitled Kamisama . In 1996 Hebi wo fumi won the Akutagawa Prize, one of Japan’s most prestigious literary awards. It was later translated into English under the title Record of a Night Too Brief. She received the Tanizaki Prize in 2001 for her novel Sensei no kaban , a love story about a friendship and romance between a woman in her thirties and her former teacher, a man in his seventies. After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, Kawakami rewrote her debut short story “Kamisama” (“God”), keeping the original plot but incorporating the events of Fukushima into the story.

NHK Drama Special “Kazeyo Arashiyo” 風よ あらしよ
I strongly recommend it to anyone with advanced knowledge of Japanese who loves teary love stories. Like many of the books I review on this blog, the writing style of this book is difficult enough that I would recommend you have studied Japanese for at least two to three years before making an attempt. The drama which consists of 5 episodes, describes how a woman decides to live according to how she desires and features a number of intimate scenes. It will be shown during summer this year in the Saturdays 10pm timeslot. 村山由佳の結婚相手 , who grew up in the countryside of Fukuoka, rejected marriage to support her poor family and moved to Tokyo. With a thirst for freedom and overflowing enthusiasm, she supported Radao’s bluestocking company and eventually became a “young icon” of the times.
While the first pages were somewhat difficult going because of expressions and words I hadn’t read before , once I grew accustomed to things I was able to appreciate the effort Murayama put into her writing. It’s no surprise that she studied literature in college, and I would even recommend her books for those looking to polish up their own writing style in Japanese. After graduating from college Kawakami began writing and editing for NW-SF, a Japanese science fiction magazine.
A hundred years ago, with the power of a single brush, she challenged the institution of marriage and social morality head-on. Yuki Kajiura‘s staff twitter account announced today that she wrote the music for the NHK Drama Special Kazeyo Arashiyo based on the novel by Yuka Murayama, published in 2020. The drama special is set to be aired on NHK BS8K in late March 2022, and then on BS Premium, BS4K in Autumn 2022.
I actually had read another of her books over 10 years ago (翼 cry for the moon). I don’t remember too many details but I know I enjoyed it. I also really enjoyed the literary style of this book.
